Definition
Diffusion controls the density and smoothness of the reverb reflections. Higher diffusion creates smoother, more blended reverb tails, while lower diffusion allows individual reflections to be more distinct.
High vs. Low Diffusion
High Diffusion (70-100%)
- Smooth, lush reverb tail
- Individual reflections blend together
- Works well for vocals, pads, orchestral
- More "processed" sound
Low Diffusion (0-40%)
- More distinct reflections
- Can hear individual echoes
- More "natural" or "realistic"
- Can sound grainy on some sources
When to Adjust Diffusion
- Drums: Lower diffusion can add excitement
- Vocals: Higher diffusion for smooth, professional sound
- Realistic spaces: Lower diffusion
- Creative effects: Experiment with both extremes
